Project Description

Recycling Campaigns

In 2018, we organized several community wide recycling campaigns with the Environmental Department of Santa Cruz County. Through these campaigns, we invited residents of the communities of Matapalo, Playa Grande, and La Garita Vieja to bring their recyclable materials to the plaza of Matapalo to be received by the Municipal recycling truck. We also provided educational information, showing residents how to properly separate their recyclables.

We held the first campaign on May 17 to coincide with World Recycling Day. We collected 100 kilos of glass, 10 kilos of aluminum, 7 kilos of tetrapak, and 10 kilos paper and cardboard. We gave a small plant potted in a planter made out of recycled material from our garden to each local resident who brought us their recycling.

On June 13, we organized our second campaign of the year to celebrate International Environment Day. We collected 90 kilos of glass, 50 kilos of plastic, 10 kilos of aluminum, 10 kilos of paper and 15 kilos of cardboard. Each person who dropped off their recycling received a small gift of fresh basil or spinach from the garden.

Many thanks to all those contributed to these campaigns to make them such a huge success!
