On June 15, Arbor Day, we coordinated a reforestation campaign with volunteers from the ASADA, KUEMAR (a volunteer organization focused on marine turtle conservation and research), and Rustic Pathways (a volunteer organization that completes building projects around the world). We planted trees at the community’s wells and throughout Matapalo. We planted 50 native species to Guanacaste including: Cortez Negro, Cortez Amarillo, Roble, Laurel, Guaitil, Guanacaste, Caoba, Ojoche, Espavel, Nance and Zapote.
On August 3, we organized another reforestation campaign at the Matapalo Soccer Field with the Older Adult Association in order to create more support on the banks of the creek. We planted 10 trees including Flor Blanca, Guanacaste and Roble Sabana.
On August 6, we coordinated a reforestation campaign with the students of La Garita Vieja Elementary School where the children actively participated by digging the holes and planting the saplings. We planted mango, Malinche, Roble Sabana, and more. The kindergarteners were given the duty of keeping the young trees watered.
Thanks to the collaborative efforts of local residents and institutions, we look forward to seeing these beautiful trees grow in our community for many years to come.
